A memoir written about growing up in the north woods of Michigan in the 1960s and 1970s. A family transplanted from upstate New York, headed by a dissident college professor who counseled and harbored Vietnam Vets and defended Richard Nixon, struggles to adapt. The family encounters difficult farm life in "Stump country" though the North Country is wildly beautiful and free. The story takes an odd twist when the author leaves the US for Britain after college, because he could not find work in the 1980 recession. He goes to London where he becomes a street muscian and briefly homeless, and beaten while gambling on pool tables and left for dead, before returning home by luck after a year in the underbelly of London. This part of the story is written in the spirit of DOWN AND OUT IN PARIS AND LONDON by George Orwell, as the author lives on the street and encounters Curb Crawlers and prostitutes, criminals, and cheats on the Dole from around Europe scamming the EU.Eventually the author ends up in Washington DC working with in an underground group involved in privately funded anti communist operations run by followers of Ronald Reagan. Running safe houses for refugees from behind the Iron Curtain among other things, in a more comical way than one might expect. This is a true story of a most unusual personal journey of survival from alcohol, mental and emotional instability, and the odd turns of life.

Met the author briefly. He said he was returning to England with his wife, and was buying a small Tardis. Was engaging and gracious, so I was slightly surprised at the pain presented in the book. Can't decide if he was very brave, naive or lucky to survive these adventures. Has a few typos, but he just sat down for a few weeks to recall events. Kind of inspiring.Product details
